On the full-moon night, a light rain fell, and Phổ Minh Temple glowed brightly with candlelight. The grand Vu Lan ceremony was held with solemnity. After the ceremony, the abbot asked everyone to stay seated, saying there was something he wished to announce. “Today, the temple wishes to be transparent about this: in the process of reviewing the old records, we found some large discrepancies over the past three years, and someone has come forward with the truth.”

The Law of Cause and Effect – also known as karma – is a universal principle that teaches that every thought, word, and action sets in motion a chain of consequences. Nothing happens by chance; all experiences are the fruit of seeds we have sown. In this series, we explore true stories of lives transformed through karmic lessons. These accounts reveal how spiritual awareness, repentance, and virtuous living can uplift the soul and reshape destiny.

According to a study by Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary, approximately US$62 billion, equivalent to more than 6.5% of the total donations made by believers worldwide, may be lost each year due to fraud and embezzlement. Making offerings is one of the important virtuous practices in Buddhism, expressing reverence and gratitude toward the Triple Gem (Buddha – Dharma – Sangha), while also helping to sustain the propagation of the Dharma and religious cultivation. Therefore, the money that people contribute in good faith also carries the trust and heartfelt devotion of each individual. When used for its proper purpose, these wholesome affinities can continue to spread goodness to the community. However, when trust is misplaced, donation funds can also become a source of temptation, leading to wrongful actions. The following story is one such case.

Phổ Minh Temple sits tucked away amid vast sugarcane fields in Phổ Khánh commune, Đức Phổ. On every full-moon day, crowds of people come and go, and behind it all, none other than Mrs. Năm, who had been in charge of the donation box for 12 years. Living alone at home, she clung to the temple like her very breath – sweeping the yard and lighting incense each morning, chanting sutras in the afternoon. That year, the rain never let up, the sugarcane harvest failed, and she fell seriously ill without money for medicine. One evening after the Vu Lan festival, once everyone had left, she gently opened the lid of the donation box and took out exactly two 20,000-đồng (80 cents USD) bills. That time, she recovered within three days, and she believed it was a blessing granted by the Buddha. From then on, at every festival, she would quietly “borrow” a little each time – sometimes for medicine, sometimes for rice, sometimes to send her child money for vocational training.

We often overlook the small things, not realizing that these very actions gradually form habits, which can then lead to greater deeds – whether creating negative karma or cultivating positive karma.

By the third year, Mrs. Năm had started exchanging small bills for larger denominations before counting the fund. She kept the books carefully, so that anyone reading them would think everything was transparent. Every full-moon night, she was the last to leave the main hall – alone, she would turn off the lights, lift the donation box, lock it carefully, then bike home through the mist.

But then, starting from a full-moon night in the fourth lunar month, she began to dream of a figure in a gray robe, standing beneath the ancestral altar, hands folded together, with no eyes on its face, its gender unclear – it simply stood there watching, without a word. She would wake up drenched in sweat, her heart pounding like a temple drum.

Perhaps these strange occurrences were not without reason. When greed begins to creep into the human heart, the line between right and wrong can gradually become blurred. The Buddha once taught a way to avoid giving rise to greed: “First, do not come into contact with it; second, when you do, remain mindful.” Only by staying mindful can we keep ourselves from allowing seemingly small temptations to lead us, step by step, into mistakes and wrongdoing.

Back then, the villagers trusted Mrs. Năm as much as they trusted Heaven and Earth, but lately, whispers had begun to spread. Some said that donations during festivals had grown larger, yet no one could understand why the temple still had to borrow more money just to repair its roof tiles. Abbot Tịnh Chơn, a monk both compassionate and perceptive, was no longer as at ease as before. He often sat in meditation longer than usual and was frequently seen deep in thought before the statue of Avalokitesvara. Once, he quietly asked Mrs. Lan, “In these past three months, have you noticed anything unusual about the donations?” That afternoon, Mrs. Lan met Mrs. Năm under the banyan tree beside the temple courtyard. “Mrs. Năm!” Mrs. Lan said, fingers fidgeting with her prayer beads. “So many people come to make offerings at our temple these days – maybe we should discuss it with the abbot, and set up an additional public record book, to put everyone’s mind at ease.” Mrs. Năm sighed, but her eyes hardened. “You’re not in my position. I’m keeping the Buddha’s money, not everyone else’s money. I’ve been doing this for over a decade, and I’ve never once come up short for the temple.”

When something is done honestly and with integrity, there is nothing to fear from transparency. But when there is something to hide in one’s heart, even an ordinary suggestion can become a source of worry. And then, the abbot made a decision that would make the truth much harder to conceal...

A few days later, the abbot announced before everyone: “Starting from the next full-moon ceremony, the counting of donations will be handled jointly by three people, with a written ledger, each amount disclosed publicly – devotees have the right to know where the money they offer goes.” Mrs. Lan let out a sigh of relief, but Mrs. Năm sat in silence, her eyes darkening. In her heart, it wasn’t the loss of money she feared, but the truth about to be exposed.

Ever since the counting and disclosure of donations was put into practice, nightmares had increasingly haunted Mrs. Năm. The unease in her heart seemed to have begun surfacing on her gaunt, weary face.

The villagers began to whisper, “Could something be wrong at our temple? Mrs. Năm’s looking noticeably pale these days – I heard she has heart trouble, but she looks like someone who’s lost her soul.” She went for a checkup at the commune health station, and the doctor said, “Your lungs are fine, blood pressure is stable, but your heart is beating abnormally fast – you may want to calm your mind and rest.” That night, she dreamed she was sitting alone in the middle of the shrine, surrounded entirely by money, but with no one there – no Buddha, no Patriarch, no Light – only the sound of a small bell and a cold chill creeping beneath every coin.

The abbot’s decision to make the temple’s records public meant the suspicions surrounding donation money could no longer be ignored. The figures in the ledger, the actual amounts of money, and what those within the temple had quietly witnessed all now needed to be clearly cross-checked.

Abbot Tịnh Chơn stepped into the main hall, holding the public ledger of income and expenses. He looked at no one in particular, and simply said gently, “The Buddha does not keep money – it is people who keep money who must keep their hearts honest. From now on, if anyone discovers wrongdoing in the donations, speak up openly before the Sangha.” The atmosphere in the temple fell completely silent. Mrs. Lan stood up. “I have something to say.” Each of her words rang out firm and decisive, like the strike of a hoe against the brick floor. “Last year, the amount recorded in the ledger came to only two-thirds of the estimated donation total. I’ve been quietly keeping my own record for the past three months. Four days ago, I also saw a bundle of money disappear from the box after it was locked. I’m not saying it was Mrs. Năm who did it, but I want us to check the original ledger together, all of it.” Mrs. Năm’s face turned pale – not out of fear, but out of shame. Murmurs stirred across the temple courtyard. “Good Heavens! Is that really true?” “She’s been taking the Buddha’s money?” Mrs. Năm shot to her feet. “I’ve served this temple for 12 years – I’ve looked after every stick of incense, every brick. How dare you insult me in front of the Buddha?”

Some wrongdoings may seem to remain hidden for a time because their karmic consequences do not appear immediately. But once a karmic cause has been planted, it does not disappear; when the conditions are ripe, its effects will inevitably manifest. Therefore, we should never assume that we can escape the law of karma simply because we do not see the consequences right away.

That night, when she got home, she found the door wide open, though she had locked it securely that morning. In the kitchen, the kettle had boiled over, steam billowing even though the stove was off. She went into her room, and a scorched smell of burning incense spread from the ancestral altar. She hurriedly put out the incense, but burned the tip of her finger doing so. Mrs. Năm lit three incense sticks before the ancestral altar, her hands trembling, and she quietly prayed, “If I’ve done wrong, please, ancestors, show me where I’ve gone wrong.”

And that full-moon night, the truth about the donation funds at Phổ Minh Temple finally came to light.

On the full-moon night, a light rain fell, and Phổ Minh Temple glowed brightly with candlelight. The grand Vu Lan ceremony was held with solemnity. After the ceremony, the abbot asked everyone to stay seated, saying there was something he wished to announce. “Today, the temple wishes to be transparent about this: in the process of reviewing the old records, we found some large discrepancies over the past three years, and someone has come forward with the truth.” Everyone was startled – it was Mr. Thủy, the reticent silversmith from the market entrance. He held up a debt ledger with Mrs. Năm’s name in it, along with a list of multiple occasions when she’d come to exchange gold for cash, the figures matching the discrepancies in the donation funds exactly. “I didn’t speak up sooner because she told me this money was from the temple, meant to buy ceremonial offerings, and that it was recorded under someone else’s name because it wasn’t convenient for the temple to handle the transaction directly. But I’ve seen for myself – this temple has never bought a single item from me.” The temple courtyard fell silent. Mrs. Năm stood up, her face utterly bloodless. “I… I didn’t steal! I… I was just holding onto it, just borrowing it temporarily.”

When a person truly recognizes their fault and sincerely repents, there is always a chance to return to the path of goodness. But if one stubbornly persists in hiding their wrongdoing, by the time they realize it, it may already be too late. For every action leaves its mark, and its consequences may arrive in ways no one could ever expect.

That night, Mrs. Năm asked to stay at the temple overnight, giving the excuse that she wanted to quiet her mind and repent. But no one could have known that it would be the last night of her life. The next morning, when abbot Tịnh Chơn opened the door to the back room, Mrs. Năm had already died – no one knew exactly when. She lay face-down on the table, her hand clutching a set of keys tightly, her eyes wide open, unable to close. On the table, a 500,000-đồng ($20 USD) bill folded into quarters had been burned black at one corner, yet there was no flame anywhere. The whole table carried no smell of smoke. Abbot Tịnh Chơn, after the funeral, grew quieter. He no longer taught or gave dharma talks much, only chanting sutras and watering the plants around the temple.

At the next full moon, he lit a single incense stick before the temple gate, turned to face the village road, and quietly prayed: “Those who have erred may still return. For those who know how to repent, the Buddha has never turned His back. But for those who hold on to their faults while still insisting they are right, no door can ever open for them.”

Through today’s story, we come to understand more deeply the seriousness of harming others’ trust and violating what belongs to the Triple Gem. But the Buddha’s teachings do not merely warn of karmic retribution – they also open a path for people to correct themselves. Therefore, let us always keep our hearts sincere, know how to stop before temptation, and consider the consequences of every action. One good thought today can become a blessing tomorrow; and one mistaken thought, if not stopped in time, can also lead to regrettable consequences. May all of us learn to live mindfully, keep our hearts upright, and always choose the path of goodness.
