Some household products contain chemicals that can harm people and pollute the environment. For a safer approach, try these simple alternatives. For blocked drains, use a plunger or plumber’s snake instead of chemical drain cleaner. For a glass cleaner, mix 1 tablespoon of vinegar or lemon juice with about 1 liter of water. Spray onto the glass and wipe dry with a reusable cotton cloth. For furniture polish, mix 1 teaspoon of lemon juice with about 500 milliliters of mineral or vegetable oil and wipe the furniture. To deodorize carpets, sprinkle generously with baking soda, leave for at least 15 minutes, then vacuum. Repeat if necessary. To remove tarnish from silver, boil 5–8 centimeters of water in a shallow pan with 1 teaspoon of salt, 1 teaspoon of baking soda and a sheet of aluminum foil. Submerge the silver and boil for another 2–3 minutes. Wipe away the tarnish with a soft dry cloth and repeat if necessary. Instead of mothballs, try cedar chips, lavender flowers, rosemary, mint or white peppercorns.
