Here is a tip if you find newborn kittens who don’t have a mother. First check whether their mother is nearby before intervening, as she is their best caregiver. However, if she doesn’t return within a few hours, they may have been abandoned. In this case, they need immediate care. Kittens under four weeks old are extremely vulnerable and depend on their mother for feeding and elimination. Without her, they need round-the-clock care. Before bringing them home, contact local veterinarians, rescue organizations, or no-kill shelters. They may have a nursing feline-mother or experienced volunteers who can help. Keeping newborn kittens warm is essential, as they cannot regulate their body temperature until about three weeks of age. Prepare a cozy nest with soft blankets or towels and place a heating pad underneath, on low. Never bottle-feed a cold kitten – let them get warm first. Use bottles designed for young kittens and if you can, get the elongated bottle nipples since they are often easier for newborn kittens to latch onto. Kittens that are 10 days old or younger should be fed every two hours. After each feeding, gently burp the kitten by lightly patting their back. Kittens younger than four weeks have to be stimulated to go to the bathroom following each feeding. Gently rub their anal area with a warm, damp cotton ball, tissue, or soft washcloth. With warmth, proper feeding, and regular stimulation, orphaned kittens have a much better chance of thriving. If you notice signs of illness, weakness, dehydration, or difficulty feeding, seek veterinary care as soon as possible.
